Pico Laser Tattoo Removal in Istanbul

Last updated: 29 September 2026 · Medically reviewed by Dr. Nihat Dik, Medical Aesthetics Physician · Maya Estetik Etiler, Istanbul

Laser tattoo removal uses very short laser pulses to break tattoo ink into small particles that the body then clears naturally. A pico laser delivers energy in picoseconds (trillionths of a second), breaking the ink into even smaller particles. Depending on the colour, depth and age of the tattoo, several sessions are usually needed, typically 6–8 weeks apart; amateur tattoos often clear in fewer sessions.

At Maya Estetik, tattoo removal is carried out with a pico laser at our Etiler clinic in Istanbul after a physician's assessment. At the first visit, the tattoo's colours, age, location and your skin type are examined, and you are given a realistic range of sessions and expectations. Removal of permanent make-up (eyebrows, lips, eyeliner) can be planned with the same assessment.

How does a pico laser work?

Tattoo ink sits deep in the skin in particles too large for the body to clear on its own. The laser light is absorbed by these particles and shatters them. The smaller particles are then removed through the lymphatic system by immune cells over the following weeks. This is why a tattoo keeps fading between sessions.

Pico lasers use far shorter pulses than conventional nanosecond (Q-switched) lasers. The ink is broken into smaller fragments mainly by a pressure effect rather than heat, which can give more efficient results, particularly with difficult colours such as blue and green.

How many sessions? Factors that affect results

  • Colour: Black and dark blue are the easiest colours to remove. Green and light blue need more sessions; yellow, orange, white and skin-tone inks are the most difficult.
  • Amount and depth of ink: Professional tattoos have denser ink at an even depth, so they usually need more sessions than amateur tattoos.
  • Age of the tattoo: Older tattoos have already partly faded and usually clear faster.
  • Location: Areas with good blood circulation, such as the torso and arms, clear faster than hands, feet and ankles.
  • Skin type and health: More cautious settings are used on darker skin to reduce the risk of pigment changes. Smoking can slow the process by affecting the immune system.

Although many tattoos can be removed completely or faded significantly, the exact number of sessions and the final result cannot be predicted with certainty, and no guarantee should be given.

How is tattoo removal performed?

  1. Assessment: The tattoo is photographed, colours and skin type are examined, and a small test pulse is done if needed.
  2. Preparation: Eye protection is worn; the area is cleansed, and numbing cream and cooling are used if needed.
  3. Treatment: Laser pulses are passed over the tattoo. The sensation is often described as a rubber band snapping against the skin.
  4. Care: The area is cooled, and a healing cream and sterile dressing are applied.

Aftercare following tattoo removal

  • Cool the area and use the cream recommended by your physician for the first 24–48 hours.
  • Do not pick crusts or pop blisters.
  • Avoid swimming pools, the sea, sauna and steam rooms until the area has healed.
  • Protect the area from the sun and use at least SPF 30 sunscreen after healing.
  • Wait for the area to heal completely before the next session (usually 6–8 weeks).

Possible side effects

Redness, swelling, pinpoint bleeding, crusting and sometimes blistering are expected after treatment and resolve within 1–2 weeks. Temporary lightening (hypopigmentation) or darkening (hyperpigmentation) of the skin may occur. White, skin-tone or pink inks can darken with laser, so a test pulse is done first for these colours. Scarring is rare but may occur if the healing process is not cared for properly.

Contact your physician: Call the clinic if you notice signs of infection such as increasing pain, warmth, pus or fever in the treated area.

Who should not have laser tattoo removal?

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Active infection, open wounds or freshly tanned skin in the area
  • Use of photosensitising medication (for example, some acne medicines; tell your physician)
  • A tendency to form keloid scars (requires physician assessment)

Tattoo removal for visitors to Istanbul

  • Tattoo removal always needs several sessions 6–8 weeks apart, so it works best for people who live in Istanbul or visit regularly.
  • One session during a short stay will start the fading process; the remaining sessions can be planned around future visits.
  • Avoid swimming and sun exposure on the treated area until it has healed — keep this in mind if you are on holiday.

How is the cost of tattoo removal determined?

The cost depends on the size and colours of the tattoo and the number of sessions required. Under Turkish Ministry of Health regulations, prices for healthcare services are not published on websites. Personalised information is provided after your assessment.

Frequently asked questions

How many sessions does tattoo removal take?

Amateur tattoos usually need 3–6 sessions; professional and coloured tattoos 6–12 or more. The exact number depends on colour, depth, age of the tattoo, location and skin type.

Does laser tattoo removal leave scars?

Permanent scarring is rare when the right settings are used and aftercare advice is followed. Temporary colour changes may occur and improve over time. Picking crusts increases the risk of scarring.

Does tattoo removal hurt?

It feels like a rubber band snapping against the skin. With numbing cream and cooling, the procedure is well tolerated by most people.

How long should I wait between sessions?

Usually 6–8 weeks. This time is needed for the body to clear the broken-down ink and for the skin to heal; more frequent sessions do not speed up the process and can damage the skin.

Can coloured tattoos be removed?

With a pico laser, colours such as blue and green can give better results than with conventional lasers. Yellow, orange and white are more difficult and may not clear completely.

Can eyebrow tattoos and permanent make-up be removed?

Yes, most permanent make-up can be removed with laser. However, make-up containing skin-tone or white pigment can darken, so a test pulse is done first.

How soon can a new tattoo be removed?

The tattoo should be fully healed first; at least 6–8 weeks is usually recommended.

Can I lighten a tattoo for a cover-up?

Yes. Fading a tattoo with a few sessions gives the tattoo artist more design freedom for a cover-up.
