Laser hair removal is a medical hair reduction method in which laser light is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair follicle and disables the follicle with heat. Because hairs are in different growth phases, usually 6–8 sessions are needed, 4–6 weeks apart on the body and about 4 weeks apart on the face. Done correctly, it gives long-lasting and significant hair reduction; 1–2 maintenance sessions a year may be recommended. It is less effective on white, grey, blonde and light red hair.
At Maya Estetik, laser hair removal is carried out at our Etiler clinic in Istanbul after a preliminary assessment. Your skin tone, hair colour and thickness, possible causes of increased hair growth and your medications are reviewed, and the laser settings are adjusted for you.

Laser light is absorbed by the dark pigment in the hair and converted into heat. This heat is transferred to the growth centre in the follicle and prevents the hair from regrowing. The light is only effective on hairs in the active growth phase (anagen), and only some hairs are in this phase at any one time. That is why a single session is not enough and several sessions are needed at set intervals.
Lasers with different wavelengths suit different skin and hair types: alexandrite (755 nm) is suited to lighter skin, diode (about 800–810 nm) to a wide range of skin types, and Nd:YAG (1064 nm) is considered safer for darker skin. At Maya Estetik, laser hair removal is performed with alexandrite and diode laser systems; which one is used and the energy settings are decided at the preliminary assessment according to your skin and hair type.
In women, rapidly increasing hair growth on the face, chest or abdomen may be a sign of a hormonal condition such as polycystic ovary syndrome. In that case, investigating the underlying cause before laser is recommended; hormonal causes may require more sessions and regular maintenance.
Temporary redness, swelling around the follicles and mild tenderness are common. Less often, temporary colour changes, crusting and superficial burns may occur; this risk increases with tanned skin and incorrect settings. That is why settings must be matched to your skin type and sun protection rules must be followed.
Contact your physician: Call the clinic if you develop blisters, an obvious burn, increasing pain or signs of inflammation after treatment.
The cost depends on the treatment area and its size, the number of sessions and the package chosen. Under Turkish Ministry of Health regulations, prices for healthcare services are not published on websites. Personalised information is provided after the preliminary assessment.
Most people need 6–8 sessions. The face and hormone-related hair growth may need more. After the course, 1–2 maintenance sessions a year may be done as needed.
Laser hair removal provides long-lasting, significant hair reduction and is described as "permanent reduction". Some fine hairs may regrow over time after the course; these are managed with maintenance sessions.
You feel a brief sting similar to a rubber band snap. Thanks to the devices' cooling systems and, if needed, numbing cream, it is usually well tolerated.
Yes. Only shaving should be used between sessions. Waxing, plucking and epilators remove the hair root and reduce the effectiveness of treatment.
Yes, on areas that are not tanned and are protected from the sun. However, sessions are postponed during periods of intense sun exposure and on tanned skin. Starting in autumn or winter makes planning easier.
Because laser targets dark pigment in the hair, results on white, grey, blonde and light red hair are limited. In that case, alternatives such as laser hair bleaching may be considered.
Yes. As hair density decreases, ingrown hairs and the related darkening usually reduce significantly.
Yes. The back, shoulders, chest, nape and beard line are the most commonly treated areas. Because men's hair is thicker and denser, a few more sessions may be needed.
