Botox in Istanbul

Last updated: 29 September 2026 · Medically reviewed by Dr. Nihat Dik, Medical Aesthetics Physician · Maya Estetik Etiler, Istanbul

Botox is a medical treatment in which a medicine containing botulinum toxin type A is injected into specific muscles with a very fine needle to relax facial expression muscles temporarily. It is used to soften forehead lines, frown lines and crow's feet. Results start to appear in 2–3 days, settle fully in 10–14 days and last about 3–4 months on average. The procedure takes around 10–15 minutes and requires no time off work.

At Maya Estetik, Botox is performed by a physician at our Etiler clinic in Istanbul after a medical consultation. Your facial expressions, muscle strength and facial symmetry are assessed, and the treatment points and dose are planned individually. The aim is not to freeze your face, but to soften wrinkles while keeping natural expressions.

What is Botox and how does it work?

Botulinum toxin is a protein that temporarily reduces the "contract" signal sent from nerve endings to a muscle. Many wrinkles are dynamic wrinkles formed by years of repeated facial movement. When the muscle causing the wrinkle relaxes, the skin above it stops folding and the lines soften.

The effect is not permanent: nerve endings gradually form new connections and muscle movement slowly returns. That is why Botox is repeated at intervals. With regular treatment, some people find that the effect lasts longer as the muscle habit decreases.

Botox is often confused with dermal fillers. Botox relaxes muscles, while fillers replace lost volume. Botox is preferred for lines caused by movement; fillers for deep lines visible at rest and volume loss. Some faces benefit from a combination of both.

Which areas can be treated with Botox?

Cosmetic uses

  • Forehead lines: Horizontal lines that appear when raising the eyebrows.
  • Frown lines (glabella): The vertical "11" lines between the eyebrows.
  • Crow's feet: Lines at the outer corners of the eyes when smiling.
  • Brow lift: A non-surgical treatment that gently lifts the tail of the eyebrow.
  • Nose and around the mouth: "Bunny lines", fine lines around the lips and a gummy smile.
  • Neck bands and jawline: Softening prominent vertical bands on the neck.

Medical uses

  • Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis): Underarms, palms and soles; the effect usually lasts 6–12 months.
  • Teeth grinding (bruxism) and masseter: Reducing excessive jaw muscle activity; it may also slim the lower face.
  • Chronic migraine: Applied with specific protocols in patients the physician considers suitable.

Gastric (stomach) Botox is a separate endoscopic procedure; see our stomach Botox page for details.

How is Botox performed? Step by step

  1. Consultation: The physician reviews your medical history, medications and expectations, and examines your facial movements.
  2. Planning: Injection points and dose are decided; photos may be taken.
  3. Preparation: The skin is cleansed and disinfected. Cooling can be used for sensitive patients.
  4. Injection: Small amounts of product are injected into the planned points with very fine needles. It feels like a brief pinprick.
  5. Review: If needed, a follow-up is done about 2 weeks later and small adjustments are planned.

Who can and cannot have Botox?

Botox may be suitable for healthy adults concerned about expression lines, excessive sweating or teeth grinding. It is not given, or is postponed, in the following situations:

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Neuromuscular disorders such as myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome
  • Active infection, acne flare-up or cold sores in the treatment area
  • Known allergy to botulinum toxin or its ingredients
  • Use of medicines that affect nerve-muscle transmission, such as certain antibiotics (aminoglycosides)

If you take blood thinners, tell the physician during your consultation; do not stop your medication on your own.

Aftercare: what to do after Botox

  • First 4 hours: Do not lie flat or keep your head bent forward for long periods.
  • First 24 hours: Do not massage or press the treated area; avoid strenuous exercise, sauna, steam rooms and sunbeds.
  • First 24 hours: Avoiding alcohol reduces the risk of bruising.
  • First 2 weeks: Check with your physician before facial massage, facials or laser treatments.

Possible side effects

When used for the right indication and at the right dose, Botox is well tolerated. Common effects are temporary: mild redness at the injection sites, small bruises and a mild headache lasting a few days. Less commonly, a drooping eyelid or eyebrow, or asymmetry, may occur; these are also temporary and resolve as the effect wears off.

Seek medical help immediately: Difficulty swallowing or speaking, shortness of breath, marked muscle weakness or visual disturbance in the days after treatment are very rare but require urgent assessment.

Having Botox during a visit to Istanbul

  • Botox can usually be done in a single short appointment, so it fits easily into a short stay.
  • Results are assessed at about 2 weeks; if you plan to leave Istanbul sooner, let us know so the plan and any review can be arranged accordingly.
  • Flying after Botox is generally not a problem; follow the 4-hour and 24-hour aftercare rules above.

How is the cost of Botox determined?

The cost depends on the number of areas treated, the amount of product needed and whether the treatment is cosmetic or medical. Under Turkish Ministry of Health regulations, prices for healthcare services are not published on websites. A personalised plan and cost are shared transparently after your consultation.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Botox take to work?

The effect usually becomes noticeable on day 2–3 and settles fully by day 10–14. Wait at least two weeks before judging the result.

How long does Botox last?

In cosmetic areas the effect lasts about 3–4 months on average. Duration depends on muscle strength, metabolism, dose and area. For excessive sweating it usually lasts 6–12 months.

Does Botox hurt?

Very fine needles are used, so it feels like a brief pinprick. Most people do not need anaesthesia; cooling or numbing cream can be used for sensitive patients.

Will Botox make my face look frozen?

With the right points and dose, facial expressions are preserved and only the excessive muscle contraction causing wrinkles is reduced. A frozen look is usually linked to an unnecessarily high dose or poor planning.

Will my wrinkles get worse if I stop Botox?

No. When the effect wears off, muscle movement returns to its pre-treatment state. Botox does not cause more wrinkles than you would have had without treatment.

When can I exercise after Botox?

Wait at least 24 hours before strenuous exercise, sauna or steam rooms. Light walking is fine on the same day.

At what age can I have Botox?

The presence and depth of wrinkles matter more than age. Treatment is only given to adults, after a medical consultation and when there is a real need.

Can Botox and fillers be done on the same day?

Yes, when the physician considers it appropriate they can be planned in the same session. Which treatment is used where is decided at the consultation.
